WereWolves, Cultists and Devil Dogs

Posted by mindedit on November 2, 2006

It occurred to me that I’d had an adventure!
Not all guns shooting, car chases and things blowing up.  Not even any real threat of danger, well not to me anway.  But an adventure nevertheless.

This is how I realised…

Stood outside the University where I work yesterday, smoking a cigarette and drinking a Mocha, yeah I know, I work hard.

Out comes some fella and NTL Friend (we worked at a Cable TV call centre together some years ago).

“Alright mate, how’s it going?  Haven’t seen you for a while.  How was your holiday in
Scotland with your boy?”

“Yeah it was great, we had were-wolves, strange Spanish cults and a devil dog.” I baited him.

“Strange cult?” he enquired, obviously not raising to the were-wolf or devil dog references.

“Yeah, it was at Roslyn Abbey, you know that’s where Dolly the sheep came from.  Not the Abbey its self but near there.”

“Dolly the Sheep?” asked Some Fella

“Yeah, the umm, the first genetically engineered sheep, from Roslyn Institute. I think.  Well anyway while we were at the Abbey though I think it’s actually a Chapel, the place got bum-rushed by about twenty to thirty weirdo Spanish cultists, they were all dressed in white and chanting ahh-ahh-eeee kind of.”

“How do you know they were Spanish?” asked NTL Friend.

“Well it sounded like they were speaking in Spanish, so I’m assuming.  Anyway, they all turned up and started chanting and forming a circle in the middle of the Abbey.  It was all a bit surreal actually, what with their flowing robes and that.  Until the tour guide kicked them all out or at least made them stop chanting.  He was quiet brave really cos he was by himself and there were loads of these cultist sorts.”

“Was he Scottish, the tour guide?” Asked NTL Friend.

“Yeah, a local fella I think”

“Ahh, well that explains it.” Said NTL Friend conclusively.

“How’s that then?” I asked, knowing it was a set-up to stereo-type the Scots.

“It’s genetic isn’t it?  They’re all hard the Scots.”

“Yeah, your right you know.  They must be cos of the Kilts and no underwear thing, it gets damn cold in Scotland you know.” I played along.

“I think they scared my boy a bit though, the cultists not the Scots.  I asked him why he was scared of them and he told me that he was scared that if they got him they might sacrifice him or something.  I had to laugh, told him not to be daft.  But I did hold him a bit closer though.”  I guess I’m a bit soft.

“But the Abbey itself was really good.  The workmanship of the stone masons, all these intricate carvings and what have you.  The detail in the Stained glass windows as well.  Stunning mate.  But the rest of the holiday was good as well.  Stayed at a guest house where we looked out over Loch Ness.  We got a telescope but we didn’t really see Nessie.  Although I think we got close a couple of times.”

I’d finished my ciggie, it was time to get back to work.  Well perhaps adventure isn’t quiet the word for it…  Perhaps it’s anecdote.  I knew it started with an ‘A’.

 Outside Roslyn
Outside of Roslyn.  No cultists or sheep in this pic though.

Some Cultist Sorts
A pic of some cultists.  Actually I don’t know who they were or even if they should be called Cultists.

Loch Ness
Loch Ness.  The place I stayed at was just to the right abd back a bit of where this pic was taken.  Quiet proud of this photo though, looks gooood, imho.
